Hello welcome to my page so first of all, I will introduce my self
I am kajal goyal a self-taught lettering artist still a beginner learning each and every day.
Calligraphy vs lettering
If you are here then I am sure you know a little about calligraphy and lettering or want to explore more about it and excel these skills. Then you will surely get some insightful information from here. If you just get to know about these terms then you must have some kind of confusion in it because a lot of time it is used interchangeably. Let’s dig into it.
CALLIGRAPHY
Calligraphy is the art of writing letters (continuously) in a more cursive style with downstroke thick and upstroke thin (as shown in the below image) and has some set of a disciple of writing it.
Traditionally, the only tool used was the nib and ink for writing in script style such as cooperlate. But now the popularity of calligraphy raised a lot and more and more people want to learn this skill. Also not only just dip pens are used in calligraphy but pointed brush, brush pens (which is more flexible and affordable than others) are used and commonly named ‘Modern Calligraphy’ or ‘ Brush Calligraphy’. It can also be done through a simple pencil also by filling in it and called ‘faux calligraphy’(go through the image below). On the other side, to improve calligraphy one should practice daily because in this muscle memory is important i.e. how much pressure to apply at downstrokes and to upstrokes.
Also, Calligraphy often classified into:
- Arabic calligraphy
- Islamic calligraphy
LETTERING
lettering is the art of forming letters (or in layman language drawing letters) focusing on each individual letter. It gives more freedom of creating your own style as compared to calligraphy but it also has some principles to follow like composition, letter structure, etc. it can be done by hand through pen or pencil on any piece of paper, by a stylus on iPad or smartphone, on computers and laptops and so on. The basic essentials of doing lettering which are must i.e. pencil, eraser, and ruler. These must be your best friend because once you fill it with ink then there nothing you change in it.
It is an umbrella term that includes hand lettering, faux calligraphy, creative lettering, etc.
Hand lettering is part of lettering as I told above. Lettering is way more popular than before and many companies are also recognizing it. But sometimes in this digital era, doing lettering digitally overpower the effort which involves in hand-lettered designs. And honestly, if you didn’t try lettering by hand first then you genuinely will not understand the basics and especially the happiness it will give you after your own creation.
Hand lettering also have some different styles i.e.
- San serif
- Serif
- Vintage
- Gothic
- Script
- Graffiti
Hopefully, this will help you to where you want to start and you can absolutely learn every form but the key is consistency and practicing daily. Just try to spend 15 min. To 20 min. a day and you good to go it will eventually become your habit. Don’t give up, keep practicing.
Happy Lettering and Create Everyday!!!
